Cannabis 101

Snapshot Cannabis History in the U.S.

Cannabis has a long and complicated history in the U.S. It was widely used in the 19th and early 20th centuries for medicinal purposes, appearing in over 100 different pharmaceutical products. However, in 1937, the Marijuana Tax Act effectively outlawed cannabis, driven by political and racial motivations rather than science. Decades of prohibition followed, culminating in the War on Drugs in the 1970s, which classified cannabis as a Schedule I drug—deemed as dangerous as heroin. The tide began to turn in 1996 when California became the first state to legalize medical cannabis. By the 2010s, more states followed suit, with Colorado and Washington legalizing adult-use cannabis in 2012. As of March 2025, 24 states and the District of Columbia allow recreational use while 39 permit medical cannabis.

Fun Fact: In 1619, Jamestown colony law required farmers to grow hemp for essential industrial uses like rope, sails and textiles. By the late 20th century, prohibition had wiped out legal cannabis farming. Today, instead of being a government-mandated crop, cannabis is a heavily regulated, multi-billion-dollar industry with strict licensing, taxes, and compliance requirements.
