Justin Sheffield

Justin Sheffield — Director of Cultivation
With a B.S. in Plant and Soil Science from Middle Tennessee University, focusing on greenhouse trials, Justin began his career in cannabis cultivation at Medicine Man in Denver. He then served as Head Grower at Flower Power Botanicals in Fort Collins, CO. In 2015, he moved to Durango, CO to lead the CBD operations at Zion Farms, partnering with High Grade Hemp for rapid expansion. In 2018, he became a partner at a large hemp operation in South Carolina, where he collaborated with tobacco farmers to apply their agronomic techniques to cannabis production. Looking to return to Type 1 cannabis, he interviewed with various operators and fortunately connected with BeLeaf in late 2020. At BeLeaf, Justin oversees all cultivation operations for Sinse Cannabis.

Justin’s favorite quote: “You could have the world in the palm of your hand, but it don’t mean a thing ’til you change it.” — Mac Miller

Listen to St. Louis Public Radio feature Justin’s Q&A on how Missouri marijuana cultivators are supplying the $1 billion recreational market.

Cannabis 101

Cultivation Timeline: Curious how long it takes to grow cannabis? Here’s a breakdown of the cultivation timeline from Justin Sheffield:

  • Mother Stock: 45 – 90 days
  • Propagation: 14 days
  • Vegetative Stage: 14 – 20 days
  • Flowering Stage: 63 days
  • Drying: 12 – 14 days
  • Curing: 14 days
  • Total: 162 to 215 days for a full cultivar production batch.

When introducing new genetics, we first flower just one plant to gather growth and potency data before scaling up. This ensures quality and safety in our cultivation process!

Fun Fact: Did you know that cannabis plants can double in size during the flowering stage? This rapid growth can surprise growers, so it’s essential to plan for adequate space and support to accommodate their expansion.
